He began writing short stories during World War II, but eventually decided to move into filmmaking. He directed The Danny Thomas Show, Crazy, and The Thin Man. He also directed the movies Leather Gloves, Willy, and Big Town. He also co-produced the low-budget boxing melodrama Leather Gloves in 1948. He later directed The Patty Duke Show and Bewitched. His other credits include the movies Johnny Cool and Muscle Beach Party, which featured Buster Keaton and Little Stevie Wonder.
Bill Asher has been married twice. His first marriage was to actress Lillian Bonner, but he was later married to Meredith Coffin McMachen. He and his wife are the parents of ten grandchildren. They live in South Orange County, California. He is an active member of the ICSC and has a special interest in golfing and athletics. He has been a mentor for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles for over 20 years
